Shankarpur is a sea beach area. It is now listed as virgin beach near Digha. Digha to Bengali people is one of the hot sea destinations after Puri.
It is a treat to me, while I visit Shankarpur, after a week long tiresome 9 hours job in my office. It is less crowded than Digha. And that is why I like this. Serene and calm are the two words looming there. Sunbathing and a mug of beer on the shack all are offering in Shankarpur, along with some delicious fish dishes.
Night in Shankarpur is cool and pleasant. A walk in the “dark and gentle” sea beach resonances the poem of Browning.
“The grey sea and the long black land;
And the yellow half-moon large and low;
And the startled little waves that leap
In fiery ringlets from their sleep,
As I gain the cove with pushing prow,
And quench its speed i’ the slushy sand.
Then a mile of warm sea-scented beach;
Three fields to cross till a farm appears;
A tap at the pane, the quick sharp scratch
And blue spurt of a lighted match,
And a voice less loud, thro’ its joys and fears,
Than the two hearts beating each to each!”
It is 14 kilometers from Digha which is most crowded and just opposite to Mandarmani and Shankarpur. A drive from Digha can reach you well to Shankarpur without any hesitation. To reach Shankarpur, you can take train or bus from Esplanade or Howrah Station. From Howrah, Tamralipta Express Kandari Express, Duranto and Paharia Express you can get down at Digha or Ramnagar. It is better, if you get down at Ramnagar or a step name “14 Miles” Choddomiles. It is gaining the popularity as Digha- Contai Road become popular to weekenders of Kolkata.
Local Sightseeing are available at reasonable rates. You can visit Udaipur, Talshari, New Digha, Old Digha, Mandarmani, Balessore, Chandaneshwar Temple and Subarnarekha River.
